This watercolour still life with jug was made by Kmetty János, we think, in 1924. It’s all about the process; the colours are really washed out, merging into one another, like he’s working out the composition right there in front of us. What strikes me is the surface, it's so thin and washy that the paper almost seems to bleed through. The translucent layers create a sense of depth, as if we're looking through multiple panes of glass. Notice that delicious blue line running horizontally along the bottom of the painting, it anchors the whole composition. The forms are loosely defined, almost geometric, creating an interesting tension between abstraction and representation. It reminds me a little of Cezanne, but softer, more dreamlike. Like the still life is dissolving right before our eyes. What do you think?
