Interieur with Still Life 

Kmetty János created this oil painting, ‘Interior with Still Life,’ in Hungary, sometime in the mid-20th century. The work presents a flattened, simplified scene, typical of the post-impressionist style that flourished across Europe during this period. But beyond its pleasing colors and domestic subject matter, this image offers a lens through which to consider Hungary's complex relationship with Western European art. Following the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, the nation sought to align itself with the artistic traditions of Vienna and Paris, as part of a broader project of modernization. Yet, figures like János were also committed to celebrating a distinctly Hungarian sensibility. The challenge for artists was how to reconcile these competing impulses.
