This hazy photograph, by an anonymous hand from Monumentenzorg, captures the terp with the remains of the castle of Oostvoorne. There’s a real sense of the passing of time within this image. The sepia tones feel like a memory, an echo. The surface is uniformly matte, which mutes the detail, and softens the edges of the mound, giving it a spectral quality. The way the light filters across the scene, veiling the details, reminds me of a Rothko painting. Looking at the form of the mound, it becomes almost abstract. It could be a landscape or a minimalist sculpture. It invites you to fill in the blanks, to imagine what was and what could be. This approach to portraying architecture as something mutable and elusive reminds me of the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Both demonstrate a fascination with documenting structures not as fixed entities but as entities undergoing constant change.
