This photograph of the Sint-Bavokerk was taken in August 1929 by an anonymous photographer from Monumentenzorg. The dark greys and blacks create a kind of tonal map of the church's exterior. It's as if the photographer was feeling around in the dark, trying to capture the essence of this sacred place. I wonder what it was like to stand there, framing this shot, trying to squeeze the sublime into a rectangular border? I imagine they were trying to convey not just the physical presence of the church, but also its history, its connection to the earth, and its spiritual significance. Photography, like painting, is a process of searching. Each snap of the shutter is an attempt to fix the flux, to make sense of the world around us. Whether it's brushstrokes or light, artists engage in a dialogue, responding to what came before, building upon the past while reaching for something new. Each capturing, each application, a step into the unknown.
