This silver gelatin print depicts the tower of the reformed church in Zuidland. It was made by an anonymous photographer. I am immediately drawn to the verticality of this image, how the tower extends upwards. And I wonder if the photographer also felt this vertical pull, maybe trying to capture something of the spiritual ambition of the church itself? There's a quiet stillness in the photograph. It feels like a moment captured, a pause in time. I imagine the photographer carefully framing the shot, maybe waiting for the right light. Were they thinking about the architecture, the history, the community connected to this place? Photography, like painting, offers a way of seeing, and thinking, and experiencing the world. It’s a conversation between the artist, the subject, and the viewer, echoing across time. We each bring our own perspective and that’s the joy of looking.
