Curatorial notes

Curator: This photograph, simply titled "Untitled (two girls sitting at little table in front of fireplace)," was captured by Lucian and Mary Brown. Editor: There is something haunting about it. The negative exposure gives it this spectral feeling, like a memory half-forgotten. Curator: Precisely. Note how the composition focuses on the intimate moment shared by the two girls, their small table set against the backdrop of what seems to be a child’s play area. Editor: And that fireplace—or rather, what appears to be a faux brick structure. It’s all a stage, isn't it? Childhood itself, a carefully constructed reality. Curator: I agree. It speaks to how childhood is both innocent play and a preparation for facing the adult world. The scale is so human. Editor: I am strangely moved. It has a lot of heart.
