Untitled (debutantes preparing for ball) c. 1966
Dimensions 9 x 6 cm (3 9/16 x 2 3/8 in.)
Robert Burian made this small black and white photograph called “Untitled (debutantes preparing for ball)”, but we do not know when. It shows a scene of young women preparing for their debutante ball in front of a mirror, highlighting the rituals and expectations surrounding femininity and social status. The debutante ball has origins in the 18th century as a way to present young women of aristocratic families at court. Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, these balls continued as a means of introducing women from wealthy backgrounds into high society. The negative format suggests that Burian made it as a personal project, rather than an editorial commission. Burian’s photograph captures an event steeped in tradition and social hierarchy. If we are to understand the full meaning of this photograph, we need to ask how the cultural institutions, social rituals, and financial networks of the time supported the debutante ball.
