Editor: Here we have David Leverett's 'Colour Structure 1 (trial proof)'. The sharp geometric shapes layered over that grid are really striking. How do you interpret this work, especially considering its title as a "trial proof"? Curator: The title hints at experimentation, a probing of the social and political potentials within abstract art. Look at the grid, a symbol of order, against the dynamic, almost disruptive shapes. Does this tension speak to any societal structures challenged during Leverett's time? Editor: I hadn't thought of it that way. It's like the shapes are pushing against the confines of the grid. Curator: Exactly. Perhaps Leverett is using abstraction to subtly question systems of control. What does that tension mean to you in our contemporary moment? Editor: I guess it’s a good reminder that even abstract art can be a form of social commentary. Curator: Precisely, and understanding those historical contexts deepens our appreciation.
