Peter Ilsted made this print of a woman working in a courtyard; the medium looks like a soft ground etching with aquatint. It's got that lovely, almost photographic tonal range, really luminous. The soft lines create a dreamy atmosphere, but it's the light that really grabs you. See how it dapples across the courtyard, catching the steps and the woman's dress? You can almost feel the warmth of the sun, imagine the quiet of the afternoon. Ilsted, part of the Danish Golden Age, had this knack for capturing domestic scenes with such intimacy. He often depicted women in quiet moments, sewing or reading, bathed in that Nordic light. It reminds me a bit of Vermeer, but with a more modern sensibility. Think of Vilhelm Hammershoi too. There’s a certain stillness, a contemplative mood that invites you to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the everyday.
