Adrianus Eversen made this sketch of buildings in the 19th century. Eversen was known for his cityscapes, capturing the unique architectural and social textures of urban life. This preliminary sketch offers us an intimate glimpse into the artist’s process. The sketch is so preliminary, in fact, that we get a feeling of what it might have been like to walk along with Eversen as he scouted out the location for a painting. The unfinished nature of the piece is almost like a relic or the beginning of a journey. It represents how the simple lines and shapes evolve to become the buildings we inhabit. The historical and social context is very different from today. This image, capturing the start of an artistic journey, reminds us that every structure begins with a simple idea.
