This oval woodcut print, "Jupiter met zijn adelaar aan zijn voeten," was created by Christoffel van Sichem II. The composition, dominated by stark contrasts of black ink on white paper, immediately draws the eye to Jupiter. He stands frontally, poised above his eagle in the center of the print. The dramatic play of light and shadow across Jupiter’s idealized physique exemplifies the Mannerist aesthetic. Sichem uses the graphic medium to enhance the lines of the figures. The repetitive, swirling patterns create a sense of dynamic energy. The formal arrangement divides the print into distinct zones, each filled with symbolic imagery that invites semiotic interpretation. The rigid symmetry creates stability, but is disrupted by the wilder, more organic forms, destabilizing the classical ideal of harmony. This tension suggests a cultural discourse about the challenges to traditional values and the emergence of new ways of thinking. The artwork's structure creates an ongoing interpretation and re-interpretation of established meanings.
