Richard Barnett made "Book Flask" sometime in the 20th century with watercolor on paper. What strikes me is how the mottled brown tones, flecked with bits of green, give the book a sense of age and history, like it’s been sitting on a shelf for decades, quietly gathering dust. Looking closely, you can almost feel the texture of the book's cover. The way Barnett layered the colors, it's as though you could run your fingers over the surface and feel every imperfection, every crease. See the edges of the pages, slightly worn? It’s like the book is telling a story, not just through its contents, but through its very being. Barnett reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi, who also spent his life painting a small number of everyday objects, seeing how they could be transformed by close observation and careful handling of paint. Barnett’s book is a quiet, thoughtful exploration of form and surface, inviting us to see the beauty in the mundane.
