Rik Wouters made this drawing of a room corner with table and chair using what looks like ink on paper. The brisk, confident lines remind me of Cy Twombly's scribbles. It’s so simple, yet so evocative. The negative space is just as important as the marks themselves; they define the objects and hint at the light in the room. Wouters isn't precious about details, instead, he captures the essence of the scene with minimal effort. I love the way the ink bleeds in places, adding depth and texture to the image. The dark patches create a sense of weight and solidity, while the lighter areas feel airy and ephemeral. The whole thing feels immediate, like a fleeting impression caught on paper. It reminds me that art doesn't always have to be about perfection, it can also be about capturing a moment, a feeling, a mood. There’s a freedom and playfulness that you can’t get any other way.
