Curatorial notes

This is the lidded guild jug crafted in tin by Matthijs van Ooyen, who lived between 1679 and 1728. The jug is a study in the interplay of horizontal and vertical lines, creating a subdued yet palpable visual rhythm. Notice how the cylindrical body is punctuated by horizontal bands, a design choice that both segments and unifies the form. The engraved text and floral motifs, encircling the jug, introduce a semiotic layer, alluding to the jug’s purpose within the social structure of the weavers’ guild. Consider the handle, an elegantly curved extension that provides a counterpoint to the rigid geometry of the body, softening the overall appearance. The lid, topped with a finial, repeats the jug’s circular motifs, reinforcing the unity of design. The jug exists not merely as a utilitarian object but as a cultural artifact, encoding social meanings and aesthetic values within its very structure. Its beauty lies in this nuanced dialogue between form and function.
