Editor: This is "Pendule met masker en guirlande," an engraving made after 1706 by an anonymous artist, held here at the Rijksmuseum. It looks like an ornate design for a clock, with a lot of swirling patterns and decorative elements. The face at the bottom seems kind of serious. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It's fascinating how timepieces have always been embedded with deeper symbolic meaning. Look at the mask – its serene, almost melancholic expression anchors the design. In Baroque art, masks often represent hidden truths, the complexities of human nature veiled beneath a surface. Editor: Hidden truths... so the clock isn’t just telling time? Curator: Not at all. The "guirlande," or garland, often signified celebration and triumph but, because these are hanging off the mask’s corners like that, it's possible the piece refers to triumph over tragedy, or simply the bittersweet fleetingness of time. And look closely – do you notice anything about how those garlands are rendered, particularly near the bottom? Editor: They look a little…faded or incomplete, almost like they are decaying slightly. Curator: Precisely. The artist is evoking vanitas symbols to suggest our mortality. Time brings beauty, success, joy and all those are finite. Each chime of the bell is one step closer to the inevitable conclusion of all of them. How does understanding these symbols change how you perceive the work? Editor: It makes it a lot darker than I first thought! I initially saw it as purely decorative, but now, all those pretty swirls seem like they are emphasizing that sense of time passing. It gives me much more to think about than if it were a regular timepiece! Curator: Indeed; visual symbolism connects the image to deep-seated beliefs and attitudes towards time and existence that affect its artistic appeal over generations.
