Curator: As we move through the gallery, we come across an untitled mixed media artwork by Jagdish Swaminathan, created in 1991. Editor: My immediate impression is that this is a painting of contrasts—the composition is divided, one side radiates warmth with its ochre and sienna tones, while the other plunges into cooler greys and blacks. It feels very symbolic, as if opposing forces are meeting. Curator: That division you notice is a hallmark of Swaminathan’s work during this period. He often explored the dialectic between tradition and modernity, using geometric abstraction to question established artistic and social norms. He believed strongly that Indian art needed to break free from Western influence. Editor: Yes, the geometric shapes definitely evoke a sense of order. I am interested in that triangle contained within the warmer hues on the left, the shape is primitive and universal; what did it symbolize to him? Curator: Swaminathan was deeply interested in indigenous art and cosmology. While not explicitly stated, the triangle may refer to ancient symbols of the divine or represent fundamental elements of the universe, something ever present in ancient cultures which may act as a counterpoint to geometric rigidity associated with modernization. Editor: So, through his use of familiar shapes he is re-evaluating cultural assumptions, challenging viewers to think about the push and pull between our heritage and progression. This reminds me of Post-Impressionism with their subjective use of color! Curator: Exactly! And that push is evident within India's complex relationship to globalism, it serves as a critical lens through which we might view society itself. It certainly encouraged dialogue at the time it was created. Editor: What I love most is the work defies easy categorization. Its combination of materials, the strong lines, and blocks of color create something unique. Even without a title, it speaks volumes! Curator: Indeed. Swaminathan created an impactful visual statement of the issues concerning India at that time. A statement with continues to provoke interesting ideas today.
