Curator: I find "The Fisheater" by Lynn Chadwick quite striking; it's held in the Tate Collections. My first impression is one of stark industrial elegance. What do you make of it? Editor: Well, it has a somewhat predatory vibe, all sharp angles and that spear-like tail. It feels almost confrontational. Curator: Indeed. Chadwick's work often explores themes of threat and vulnerability. He emerged in post-war Britain, a period marked by anxieties. Editor: It does feel like a reflection of that era, a time of rebuilding and deep uncertainty. The sculpture’s form, so skeletal, speaks to fragility. Does the title itself hint at a more critical message? Curator: Perhaps. The act of consuming, of preying on others, can be a potent metaphor. It makes you think about the power dynamics at play. Editor: It leaves me contemplating not just nature's food chain, but also humanity's. Curator: A potent visual statement on post-war anxieties. Editor: Definitely gives us something to consider about a predatory world.

This is the masterpiece of Chadwick’s early work during which, like many of his contemporaries, he produced forms based on ideas of nature. He saw nature as violent and dangerous. Many commentators at the time, in particular the leading critic Herbert Read, saw this as an intuitive response to the violence of recent times and to the anxieties of nuclear age. Although the titles and appearance of such works often suggest particular animals, the artist usually discussed them in terms of their form and manufacture. Gallery label, August 2004
