This is "Apple Monster" by Alexander Calder, a playful sculpture made with painted wood and wire. I can imagine Calder in his studio, bending wire and carving wood. The sculpture must have emerged through improvisation. He probably had an idea of what he wanted to do, but I bet the materials themselves led the way. It's got those beautiful earth tones like terracotta and dark green. The wire is such a great touch; a playful scribble that contrasts with the solid forms. I like the way the white shape balances on the creature’s head, like an absurd crown or a little thought bubble. Calder was known for his mobiles, of course, but this sculpture really shows his sense of humor and lightness. It reminds me of a child's drawing come to life—a bit wonky, a bit strange, but full of charm. All sculpture involves an ongoing dialogue with materials, so it’s like Calder made a friend, rather than a monster!
