Dadamaino made this artwork, Ottico dinamico, with industrial materials: paint, and aluminum. The aluminum squares, arranged in a dynamic checkerboard pattern, catch and reflect light in a way that painted surfaces simply cannot. The contrast between the matte black background and the reflective metal creates a visual vibration, an optical dynamism that gives the work its name. Dadamaino used techniques that are more closely associated with industrial fabrication than with traditional artistic practices, raising questions about the role of the artist in an age of mechanical reproduction. The artwork is a reflection of a changing world, one in which new materials and methods were challenging old hierarchies and blurring the lines between art, design, and industry. It's in this context of material exploration, process and social context that we can fully understand the breadth of Dadamaino's work, appreciating its departure from traditional notions of artistic skill.
