This cast iron Rhinoceros still bank was made by the Arcade Manufacturing Company. Look how the heavy, solid form contrasts with the playfulness of its design as a child’s coin bank. I love the texture! It's a bit rough, almost like the rhino's hide itself, which makes you want to reach out and touch it. The dark, almost chocolatey brown color gives it a sense of history, as if it’s been around for ages, quietly collecting coins and stories. There are hints of copper coming through, like the pink blush around the mouth, a gentle highlight to this heavy form. The small screw on the side hints at the bank’s functional aspect. The piece has a quiet simplicity, making it both an object of art and everyday life. It reminds me a little of the work of Elie Nadelman, who also made simple, stylized sculptures that feel both modern and timeless. Art can be anything, even a rhino that saves your pennies!
