This meticulous drawing, a side chair with cane back and seat, comes to us from the hand of Nicholas Gorid. It's a study in lines, a pure exploration of form and function. The drawing doesn't hide its process; it revels in it. You can almost feel the scratch of the pencil on paper as Gorid maps out every curve and joint. I love the way the lines are so clear, yet they have a certain warmth, like a friendly conversation. The cane detailing in the seat looks particularly intriguing, doesn't it? It's as if Gorid is inviting us to imagine the texture, the way it would feel against our skin. There’s a beautiful simplicity in the rendering of form. It makes me think of the way Agnes Martin approached the grid, stripping it down to its essence, finding a kind of quiet beauty in repetition. It reminds us that even the most functional objects can be a source of contemplation.
