Editor: Here we have Bill Dane's "Untitled (Estanbul)," a black and white photograph. The ornate fence in the foreground gives the image a sense of depth. What story do you think this photograph is trying to tell? Curator: The composition draws our eye to this particular locale, Istanbul, a place of cultural intersection. How do we interpret the architecture here? And how does the fence act as a boundary, both literally and figuratively, in relation to ideas of inclusion and exclusion? Editor: That’s a great point. The fence *does* create a separation. Curator: Exactly! And in this context, thinking about the social and political landscapes of Istanbul, it compels us to ask: who is being kept in, and who is being kept out? Editor: I hadn’t considered that. It makes me look at the image in a completely different light. Curator: Photography often subtly reveals the photographer's perspective, inviting us to consider whose voices are amplified and whose are silenced in its visual narrative. Editor: Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind moving forward.
