Fernand Léger made this painting, *Manufacturers*, with oil on canvas. Just imagine Léger in his studio, with the smell of paint thick in the air, constructing this world of bold lines and primary colours. You can almost see him, moving around the canvas, shifting and refining these figures and geometric forms, trying to find the sweet spot. I can really sympathize with Léger here. What must it have been like for him to build this architectural space? What kind of world was he trying to create? Look how he uses strong black outlines to define each shape, really making them pop against the blue sky. And notice the thick application of paint, giving everything a solid, almost industrial feel. That coiled rope, for example. It is like a single brushstroke that communicates weight and texture. Léger’s not just showing us a construction site, he’s inviting us to think about how we build our world, piece by piece. Painters are in an ongoing conversation, inspiring each other. Léger opens a space of imagination, suggesting that painting is a form of embodied expression, allowing for multiple interpretations.
