Fernand Léger made Constructeurs, échelle et roue with paint, and probably brushes, who knows what else! The cool thing here is the directness of the marks, how the black outlines define not just shapes but also kind of push them forward. There's something very physical about this painting, I mean, look at that wheel! It’s practically jumping off the canvas. And the colors, those reds and yellows, they’re not trying to be subtle. They’re there to grab your attention, to make you feel the energy of the construction site. I’m drawn to the figure climbing the ladder with his arms raised. Is he reaching for something? Or just celebrating the work? It’s this ambiguity that makes the painting so alive. Léger reminds me a bit of Stuart Davis, both playing with flattened space and bold colors, though Léger’s got this industrial edge that’s all his own. It’s like he’s saying, "Art can be as strong and bold as the machines we build."
