This is a photo album page from an unknown date by an anonymous artist, and it’s full of interesting photographic gestures. The composition is a kind of collage of different images, each with its own mood and story. What strikes me is how each photograph is arranged, creating relationships between the images that aren’t immediately obvious, it’s almost like a visual game of association. Look at the way the different photographic images seem to exist independently, each with its own level of clarity and detail. The surface is flat, and we don’t know much about how these images were handled. You get the feeling the artist wanted to emphasize the photograph as an object, as a moment captured in time. It reminds me a bit of Gerhard Richter’s photo paintings, the way he blurs and obscures images to create a sense of distance and memory. Ultimately, it’s all about how we perceive and remember.
