Richard Diebenkorn made this drawing of a female nude, sometime in the 20th century, using ink on paper. It’s all about the line here, isn’t it? One continuous movement, like a dance across the page. I love how Diebenkorn uses the line to suggest form, but also to flatten it out. Look at the way he draws the breasts, for example. They're just these simple curves, almost like parentheses, but they still convey a sense of volume and weight. Or the hands, they’re just a scribble, but they’re full of energy. There's something so direct and honest about it, like he's just trying to capture the essence of the figure. It reminds me a bit of Matisse, his line drawings, that same sense of ease and confidence. But Diebenkorn has his own unique sensibility. It’s a reminder that art is never really finished, it’s an ongoing conversation, an exploration of seeing and feeling.
