Fritz Syberg made this pen and ink drawing, called 'Nu faldt Efteraaret paa...' - ‘Now the Autumn has fallen…' - at an unknown date. The layering of lines is really interesting to me, the way it creates depth out of what is essentially a flat surface. It's almost like Syberg is thinking through the image, each stroke building on the last to create a sense of volume and texture. You can see it particularly in the top left corner, where the lines almost vibrate with energy. This makes me think about artmaking as a kind of dialogue, each mark responding to the ones that came before. The drawing feels immediate, almost like a quick sketch, but there's also a real sense of deliberation in the way the lines are placed. It reminds me a little of Paula Modersohn-Becker, another artist who was interested in capturing the everyday beauty of the natural world through a very personal lens. Both artists seem to be engaged in an ongoing conversation with the world around them. It's not about fixed meanings but about the ongoing process of seeing and feeling.
