Curator: Looking at this artwork titled "Safe" by Nigel Van Wieck, created with oil paint, I am struck by the juxtaposition of natural and constructed elements. The imposing wall dwarfs the beach scene. Editor: I agree; the architectural structure dominates, immediately setting an odd mood. There's an air of unease in what is expected to be a peaceful setting. It makes you question ideas about privacy, the human condition and how we are confined by societal infrastructure. Curator: Precisely. This sense of unease comes through the stark realism contrasted against what one assumes to be an idealized place to be - relaxing on a beach. It creates an emotional dissonance; what is ‘safe’ in our modern context? Editor: It certainly is evocative, using the visual language of modernism, this work engages intersectional themes concerning access and division, bringing forth the idea of those that have the opportunity to ‘get away’ on holiday and those that may not have that privilege or safety to do so. Curator: I am drawn to the visual narrative and the imposing, shadowing geometry that creates it, drawing our eye to that architectural form first and forcing the human figures to second place. What do you think is achieved with the human figure included at all? Editor: It draws parallels between how the wall has cut the viewer off, creating both an invitation to go up those steps but also presenting us with an image of forced division as we look upon somebody's safety, relaxation, and peace. This image allows for a discourse between the reality and illusion. Curator: An interesting point. What resonates with me is the overall idea of an enclosed existence – perhaps even our sense of vulnerability is heightened rather than subdued, irrespective of geographic location. It compels viewers to face many truths we grapple with in our contemporary environment, no doubt. Editor: This piece certainly offers an opportunity to interrogate what underpins our existence and how constructed barriers are shaping and will continue to impact individuals.
