Pieter Gerardus van Os created 'The Canal at ’s-Graveland', an oil on canvas painting, which now resides in the Rijksmuseum. The structure of this composition is bisected by the still canal which acts as a mirror, reflecting the buildings and sky above. The placement of the buildings on either side draws the eye into the tranquil depths of the canal, while the dense foliage in the foreground adds a layer of depth and visual interest. Van Os’s precise brushwork is evident in the detailed rendering of the buildings and the play of light on the water's surface, a testament to the formal techniques prevalent in Dutch landscape painting. The painting captures a moment of serene contemplation, framed by the symmetrical and ordered structure of the Dutch landscape. The sky, rendered in soft, muted tones, lends an airy, contemplative mood to the scene. This use of light and shadow enhances the texture of the clouds, inviting the viewer to reflect on the ephemeral nature of the scene.

In 1817 the Amsterdam merchant Herman Waller com-missioned Van Os to paint two prospects of the village of ’s-Graveland, where Waller had a country house. Van Os painted this scene either from a window in Waller’s house or from the local inn. This high vantage point afforded an unusual perspective. The diagonal view of the ’s-Graveland canal also includes the garden, with a gardener and two dogs.
