Emilius Dehé made this landscape, "Bomen aan een duinrand tussen Egmond en Bergen", as a handmade print. The approach to mark-making feels meticulous and the palette, limited as it is, gives a sense of depth. I love the materiality in the image. It has a tactile quality, despite being a print. The texture is so rich; you can almost feel the roughness of the bark. The way the light filters through the trees creates this dance of dark and light areas. Look at the lower part of the image. Notice how the dots mass together to create shadows, and how this relates to the brighter patches. Dehé reminds us that art is an ongoing conversation, continually borrowing and innovating. Like Van Gogh maybe? Art embraces ambiguity over easy answers.
