This detailed print of trees on a dune between Egmond and Bergen was created by Emilius Wilhelmus Dehé, a Dutch artist born in 1886. Dehé lived through both World Wars and died in 1947, two years after the end of the Second World War. Working in the Netherlands in the first half of the 20th century, Dehé captures the quiet strength of trees, standing between land and sea. It is tempting to read these trees as metaphors for resilience. While the title focuses our attention on their geographic location, the density of the trees also conveys the experience of nature. The eye moves across the surface of the print, lingering in the shadows. With its striking use of light and shadow, the artist invites us to contemplate the enduring presence and silent fortitude of these trees. In what ways do they bear witness? Perhaps they remind us of our own capacity to endure.
