This extendable oval table was made from wood by Klaas van den Berg. The maker has clearly considered the materiality of the piece: it’s not just a table, but wood that has been lovingly carved. There’s a satisfying roughness to the surfaces and edges that speaks to the hand of the maker. The wood grain is visible, and not obscured by varnish or decoration. The surfaces haven’t been sanded down to perfection, so you can see the tool marks. It makes you wonder about the process - how much time was spent on each detail, how carefully considered each decision was. You can trace the process in your mind as you look at it. Take a look at the legs: they are sturdy, but the addition of the connecting platform adds a certain elegance. This table isn't just functional, it's a statement about the beauty of simplicity, like the work of Donald Judd, but in furniture form. It's a reminder that art and design are really part of the same ongoing conversation. We are invited to consider how art embraces ambiguity.
