Agnes Slott-Møller made this drawing of the inside of Bjernede Kirke with a pencil, though we don't know exactly when. Look at how she's built up the form and space of the church interior with these very delicate marks. It's like she's feeling her way around the architecture, letting the pencil lead the way. The paper is left bare in many places, creating a sense of light and airiness. You can almost feel the quiet stillness of the space. She hasn't tried to hide the process, either, you can see the faint lines where she adjusted her perspective, it's like you're sitting right next to her as she draws. The way Slott-Møller uses line reminds me a bit of some of Alberto Giacometti's drawings; that same sense of searching, of trying to capture something fleeting and ephemeral. Both artists invite us to slow down and really see the world around us, appreciating the beauty in the everyday.
