This photograph of the Puerta de la Justicia in the Alhambra in Granada was created by Señan y Gonzalez. It shows a gateway constructed from brick and stone, the scale of which is immense. The rough texture of the stone contrasts with the smooth surface of the photograph, inviting us to imagine how it might feel to touch. The labor involved in constructing such a monumental structure would have been considerable, demanding the skills of masons, bricklayers, and other artisans. But the photograph itself is also a testament to human ingenuity. The architects demonstrated a mastery of engineering, logistics, and complex design to create the space. The photographers likewise used sophisticated chemical and optical processes to capture the space. Both exemplify how creative practices extend across art, craft, and design.
