This small black and white photograph shows two Wehrmacht soldiers at the seaside with a horse. I wonder about this scene, and the artist behind it. There is a lot of grey—the sky is grey, the sea is grey, the sand is grey. The uniforms of the soldiers are a slightly darker tone. It makes me think about the subtle variations in tone and texture. I can imagine the artist trying to decide what grade of paper to use to get the right amount of contrast and sharpness, like, how do you capture the bleakness and coldness of the scene? Maybe the artist was thinking about the work of other war photographers, how they capture the human condition, the emotional toll, how the medium affects our perception, and how can they bring a new perspective? Whatever it was, it’s now part of an ongoing conversation, where artists inspire each other across time, finding new ways to express themselves.
