This is 'Comment trouvez-vous ce petit vin-la...' by Honoré Daumier, created during a time of significant social and political change in France. Daumier was a master of lithography, using his art to comment on the bourgeoisie. Here, we see a well-dressed man sampling wine directly from a large barrel, while two workers lurk, half-naked, inside the vat and seem to be the source of the wine. Daumier uses his distinctive style to highlight social disparities and critiques the upper class's detachment from the realities of labor. Daumier was known for his social critiques, often published in satirical magazines. His art provides a lens through which we can reflect on the complex interplay between labor, consumption, and social class in 19th-century France, as it may still be today.
