This is a page from a drawing manual by Henri Testelin, created sometime in the 17th century. It is a book illustrating the art and science of painting and drawing. Testelin was a painter to the French court and one of the founding members of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. The image is of nine faces that are meant to exemplify different emotions. Consider how this relates to the art academy. Testelin was helping to codify the way art was taught, so that artists could create works in line with the aesthetic tastes of the court. The French Royal Academy was invested in establishing a clear set of rules and standards that were considered to be in good taste, and in line with the monarchy's political interests. We can learn more about this by looking at other texts and images produced at the academy, and comparing them to the art being produced outside of such institutions.
