This is a print called "Weiland met een paard en twee koeien" by Cornelis Albertus Johannes Schermer. It depicts the pastoral scene of a horse and two cows grazing in a field. Such animals are more than mere farm life; the horse, a symbol of power and virility, stands alongside the cow, an ancient symbol of nourishment and motherhood, deeply rooted in agrarian societies. These motifs are not unique to this time and place. Consider the horses of the Apocalypse or the sacred cows of ancient Egypt. The archetype of the nurturing cow appears, for example, in images of Hathor, its maternal spirit, and the horse carries us back to the heroic steeds of classical antiquity. The persistence of these images through history is not accidental. They tap into our collective unconscious, stirring primal emotions and cultural memories. The very act of depicting these animals speaks to a yearning for a simpler, more connected existence, a return to the land, echoing the cyclical patterns of life itself.
