Maria Bozoky’s watercolor, ink, and paper work presents a woman standing “At the Beach.” The way the artist's hand moved here is pretty evident. The ink outlines are decisive, but the colors feel more fluid, like watercolor washes colliding and merging. Those dark brushstrokes around her shoulders are really gorgeous. I can almost feel her standing there, maybe thinking about something, maybe nothing at all, just watching the waves. I wonder what Bozoky was thinking when she made this? Did she just want to capture a quick impression of someone she saw, or was it more like she was building a mood, a feeling, with the colors and lines? I'm thinking of Manet here, and of course, the Expressionists. So much painting is about letting go and seeing what happens, trusting that something interesting will come out of it. You know, artists, we're all just bouncing ideas off each other, trying things out, hoping something sticks.
