Editor: This untitled print by John Walker features simple lines to depict two figures. One appears to be wearing a mask and the other seems to be floating above with a heart. How would you interpret this artwork? Curator: Consider how masks often symbolize hidden identities or roles we play. The floating figure could represent an idealized version of the self, or perhaps a lost connection. Do you think the heart suggests longing or something else entirely? Editor: Longing, maybe even a dream state. I didn’t consider the mask as a symbol itself, but that adds another layer. Thanks! Curator: Indeed, visual symbols embed layers of narrative. It makes you wonder what Walker was thinking.
