William High created this watercolour, called Bracelet, at an unknown date. What I notice first is the colour and the way High lays down the paint. The precision needed to render this object with such clarity and detail is really beautiful to me. It must have taken hours. Look at how the red paint, that depicts the stones, pools in some areas giving depth and dimension. Then observe the thin lines of metallic paint which show how the stones are linked together. This gives the bracelet a sense of movement, as though it is being worn, or is about to be fastened around a wrist. The simplicity reminds me of the work of Agnes Martin, whose minimal paintings create a feeling of calm and quiet contemplation. Ultimately, this piece asks us to consider the value we place on beauty, adornment, and the artistry of everyday objects.
