This piece of old quilted cloth was made by Lucille Lacoursiere, but we don't know exactly when. What strikes me is the texture of the fabric, like a field of red, with the little marks laid on top. It reminds me that everything is just color and surface, and that's how we know things. The surface feels worn, doesn’t it? You can imagine the process that Lacoursiere went through to create this textile. Look at how the figures are placed, with a sort of naive directness. I see them hunting, and that stark red, repeated and repeated, is full of energy. It is almost like a conversation between different makers, across time. Like a Cy Twombly with more violence and perhaps less self consciousness. Which is maybe a good thing! Art is just an ongoing game of telephone, after all.
