"Two fortune tellers (?) wearing top hats viewed from behind" was created by Francisco Fierro in the 19th century using watercolor and graphite. Fierro, a key figure in Peruvian art, captured the essence of Lima's vibrant street life in post-independence Peru. As a mixed-race artist, Fierro occupied a unique position in society, straddling different social strata. This work offers a glimpse into the social dynamics of the time. It depicts two figures, possibly fortune tellers, from behind, their top hats suggesting a touch of European influence blended with local customs. We can see a society in transition, negotiating its identity in the wake of colonial rule. Fierro’s images served as visual records of everyday life and cultural exchange. The artist doesn't provide a clear narrative, but he encourages us to reflect on the complexities of identity, class, and cultural assimilation in 19th-century Peru.
