Charles Philipon created this print, "Vrouw bekijkt twee mannen aandachtig", sometime in the 19th century. It is currently held at the Rijksmuseum. The print presents an interaction between a woman and two men, rendered with a satirical edge. The figures are arranged in a triangular composition, drawing our eyes from the woman, whose face is hidden, to the two men who are posturing. Notice how line and form define the figures. Exaggerated silhouettes and caricatured facial expressions suggest a critique of social affectations. The texture and materiality of the print contribute to this sense of immediacy. The visible hatching and cross-hatching marks, combined with the light washes of color, create a sense of movement and informality. Philipon's work engages with the semiotic systems of fashion and gesture, inviting us to decode the social meanings embedded within these visual signs. The artwork challenges the fixed ideas of social decorum, engaging with new ways of thinking about representation and power. This piece provides a visual language to deconstruct social roles.
