Suzuki Harunobu created this woodblock print, "Picture Book - The Brocade of Spring," capturing a fleeting moment of beauty in everyday life. A serene tableau unfolds as two women are indoors: one adjusts her hair, another holds a fan. Outside, a potted plant sits on a veranda-like structure, while the scene is veiled by a curtain of rain. Rain, a ubiquitous symbol, appears across cultures, representing cleansing, renewal, and even melancholy. Think of the deluge in ancient flood myths, like Noah's Ark, washing away the old to make way for the new. Or consider the symbol of the deluge as seen in Renaissance paintings, signifying purity and divine intervention. Here, the rain seems to isolate the women in their private world. This intimacy resonates deeply, triggering subconscious associations with shelter, protection, and quiet contemplation, inviting viewers to find solace in this transient, yet eternal, image.

A few months after Harunobu’s death, the two-volume Picture Book: The Brocade of Spring was published, offering poems alongside illustrations of prostitutes. Harunobu must have completed his illustrations in time for the book before his passing.
