"Picture Book - The Brocade of Spring" is a woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, one of the most famous artists of the "ukiyo-e" ("pictures of the floating world") genre. This particular work depicts two women, likely courtesans, in a domestic setting, with one adjusting her hair and the other holding a fan. The print is typical of Harunobu's works, showcasing delicate lines and vibrant colors. These prints were often published in sets, allowing collectors to gather complete stories or collections of scenes. They were popular among the general public and served as a window into the world of fashion, beauty, and social life of Edo period Japan. The print is now part of the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Comments
A few months after Harunobu’s death, the two-volume Picture Book: The Brocade of Spring was published, offering poems alongside illustrations of prostitutes. Harunobu must have completed his illustrations in time for the book before his passing.
