This ‘Horse Weather Vane’ painting is of unknown date and was painted by an anonymous artist, using what looks like watercolor. I like to imagine the anonymous artist outside, sketching the weathervane as it’s battered by the wind. The horse appears animated, not static, captured mid-stride with two legs floating, and a mane blowing in the wind. Maybe the artist wanted to show the horse as both grounded and free. The anonymous artist has a sensitive and skillful control of watercolor, rendering the form with light and shade, but also seems to be interested in how it fades into the background, too. You know, I bet a bunch of artists have painted this weather vane, each seeing something different in it, and wouldn’t it be great to see all those paintings together? It reminds us that artists are always looking at the same things, but seeing them in their own ways.
