This is a roll of lilac ribbon with three purple horizontal stripes by Gustav Schnitzler. At first glance, it’s the colours that jump out – that soft lilac paired with the sharp purple stripes, so delicate, so precise. And then you see the frayed edge, that one little imperfection. It's like Schnitzler is reminding us that even in the most perfect-looking things, there's always a bit of chaos, a bit of give. This piece is all about the material: the way the light catches the ribbon, the texture of the frayed edge, the way the colours interact. I'm drawn to the point where the stripes meet the frayed edge. It’s so subtle, almost like a secret. This roll of ribbon sits in my mind alongside the work of someone like Haim Steinbach, who takes everyday objects and elevates them to art. Both artists remind us that art isn't just about grand gestures. Sometimes, it's about noticing the beauty in the simplest, most unassuming things.
