Here we see a trumpet made by William Sandbach. Notice the presence of tassels that adorn this instrument. Tassels, beyond mere decoration, are ancient symbols, which have evolved through many cultures. In ancient Egypt, tassels were often associated with divinity and power, adorning the attire of pharaohs and priests. They symbolized status and connection to the divine, much like the trumpets themselves announced the presence and authority of rulers. Consider also their presence on ceremonial robes in various religious traditions, from Buddhist prayer shawls to academic gowns. The tassel, in these contexts, signifies wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual authority. These symbols of power and importance have morphed over time, yet they echo through the subconscious, triggering deep-seated associations with authority, wisdom, and the sacred, even in our modern contexts. The psychological resonance of these symbols creates a powerful link to our past.

William I ordered this silver trumpet for his Life Guards. The long inscription on the bell lists the members who defended their country from the French in the years 1813 and 1814. On 26 March 1814, four days before William’s investiture as Sovereign of the Netherlands, this trumpet was presented to the former Life Guards at an official ceremony on Amsterdam’s Dam Square.
