Editor: This is Ludolph Büsinck's "S. Peter," housed here at Harvard. The muted tones give it a somber feel, and I notice Peter clutching keys. What’s your take on the symbolism here? Curator: The keys, of course, are Saint Peter's attribute, representing his role as the gatekeeper of Heaven. But look at how he holds them, almost defensively. It suggests a burden, a weight of responsibility. Is it a divine power or a life sentence? Editor: That’s a fascinating reading. I hadn’t considered the ambivalence in the image. Curator: Visual symbols evolve. Originally signs of power, over time, they reflect the burdens of authority. The image captures this shift beautifully. Editor: I'll never look at keys the same way again! Curator: Nor will I. It's why art keeps us engaged!
