This floral composition was created by Necmeddin Okyay using ebru, the traditional Turkish art of paper marbling. Ebru involves floating pigments on a tray of thickened water, manipulating them into patterns, and then transferring the design onto paper. Okyay, a master of this technique, took it to new heights, pioneering what is known as "flower ebru." Here, he has skillfully formed recognizable blooms with incredible precision, controlling the floating colors to mimic the delicate forms of flowers. This artform, while visually stunning, asks us to reconsider the boundaries between craft and fine art. Ebru was historically used for decorative purposes, such as book covers and endpapers. But Okyay elevated it to an independent art form, demonstrating the potential for immense artistic expression within traditional techniques. He prompts us to consider how processes and materials shape our understanding and appreciation of art.
